Mandraki

Mandraki is the capital and the island’s port. It is built amphitheatrically on the hill with the Venetian castle and the monastery of Panagia Spiliani.
The settlement is built according to the traditional architecture of Dodecanese and enchants every visitor. White washed houses, multi-coloured shutters and small flowered yards take visitors to past times.
A visit to the Knights’ Castle, built in 1315 on the top of hill is a must.
In the Castle’s yard was built the monastery of Panagia Spiliani in 1600. Fir its construction there were used architectonic members of antiquities. In the monasteries interior you will see a small library with rare ecclesiastic manuscripts and books. Distinguishes the icon of Panagia Spiliani, the island’s protector.
In Paleokastro you will see the remains of the ancient acropolis. Parts of the wall are dated from the 4th BC.
It is worth visiting the folkloric museum of Nisyros that hosts important species of folkloric art and provides important information for the islands’ cultural inheritance.
Close to Mandraki is one of the most beautiful beaches of the island, Hohlaki with impressive volcanic black pebbles, a pole of attraction for visitors. You can swim in the small sandy beach of Agios Savvas, very close to the city. You can also approach the small island Giali, northwest of Nisyros with stunning beaches. In Giali is excavated pumice.
1km from Mandraki is the complex of Loutra. The sulphurous sources are ideal for healing many diseases, like rheumatic and cutaneous illnesses.
The tourist infrastructures of the capital are satisfying. You will find hotels and rooms to let providing all comforts. Options for entertainment vary. There are bars and many restaurants. If you be there around the 15th of August you will have the chance to attend the two-day festival and other celebrations.
