Lefkes
|
The hilly village of Lefkes is located almost in the center of the island, in a 250m height and 11km from Parikia. It is a beautiful village, built amphitheatrically in the mountain's banks. The combination of nature and traditional elements of Cyclades islands give it an exquisite charm. The village was built in the 16th century by fugitives that came to the island from Crete and Peloponiso. Back then it was named Iria. A walk in the traditional settlement shows the uniqueness of Lefkes. The white houses, the white-washed pavements and the small yards with colourful flowers will take you to past times. One thing is for sure: that the Byzantine road that leads from Lefkes to Prodromo will stay in your mind. It was built 1000 years ago and has paving tiles made of marble. This walk makes the visitor acqaitant with the land and with the flora and fauna of Paros. Another characteristic of the island is the many byzantine churches. It is worth to visit the temple of Trinity that has remarkable byzantine icons. The temple of Saint Paraskevi is the first church built in the village. Lefkes, despite their tourist development, keep their traditional identity. It is the ideal destination for those seeking peace and calm. There are a lot of hotels and rooms to let in the village. In the taverns you will taste delicious traditional plates.
