About Albania
Albania is a country in Southeastern Europe, located on the western Balkans between the Adriatic and Ionian Seas. It is a land of strong contrasts, where mountains, rivers, lakes, and beaches exist within short distances, creating one of the most diverse natural landscapes in Europe. In the north, the Albanian Alps offer dramatic peaks, deep valleys, and untouched wilderness that attract hikers and nature lovers, while in the south the Albanian Riviera is famous for its clear turquoise waters, hidden coves, and coastal villages such as Dhërmi, Himarë, and Sarandë.
The country also has important lakes like Shkodra, Ohrid, and Prespa, which are shared ecosystems of great ecological value. Albania has a rich and complex history shaped by Illyrian tribes, Roman and Byzantine rule, and centuries under the Ottoman Empire, all of which have left visible marks in its architecture, traditions, and archaeological sites.
Cities such as Berat and Gjirokastër, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, preserve Ottoman-era stone houses and castles, while Butrint shows layers of Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Venetian civilization. Albania declared independence in 1912 and later went through major political and social transformations, especially after the fall of communism in the 1990s. Albanian people are widely known for their hospitality and the cultural concept of "besa," which represents trust, honor, and keeping one's word.
The country is religiously diverse, with Muslims, Orthodox Christians, and Catholics living together in relative harmony. In recent years, Albania has developed rapidly, especially its capital Tirana, which has become a modern and colorful city with growing infrastructure, cafés, and cultural life. Tourism is one of the fastest-growing sectors, as visitors are attracted by its authenticity, natural beauty, and affordability compared to other European destinations. Albania today is a mix of ancient heritage and modern development, offering a unique experience where tradition and progress coexist naturally.
