Artemisio

A small village in Arcadia, located 20 km from Tripoli. It is built on the foothills of Mount Artemisium and at the northern edge of the Mantineia plain.
Artemisium is administratively part of the Municipality of Mantineia, whose seat is the village of Nestani.
Artemisium was formerly known as Kakouri or Lagousi. According to tradition, the name Kakouri comes from the combination of the words "kako" (bad) and "orio" (boundary), due to a narrow passage on the northern side of the village that, during the Ottoman period, was part of the Tripoli-Kalavryta route. Ambushes against the Ottomans took place there during the Greek Revolution. Another theory suggests that the name Kakouri comes from the identification of the Arcadian Kakouris with the village.
The road connecting the village with Tripoli passes through Ancient Mantineia and is a popular route surrounded by the natural beauty of the area.
