Megalo chorio

In the north part of the island we meet Megalo Chorio, the impressive capital of Tilos. It is located 6km northeast of Livadia, the island’s port. It is built in an amphitheatrical way on the slopes of a hill, where are saved the remains of the Knight’s Castle. Until the beginnings of the 18th century the village was inside the castle walls. From time to time the region around its walls started to be inhabited, and the whole village was transferred in its current position. This new settlement maintains the dodecanesean identity and distinguishes for its tranquility.
In the same location we see today the Knight’s Castle, used to be the acropolis of the ancient town. The remains of Pithios Apollo temple reminisce the island’s age-long history. Almost on the bases of the ancient temple was built the old church of Taxiarch, with remarkable murals of the 15th century. Also important are the icons transferred in the homonym church built in 1827, in Megalo Chorio.
4km from the capital you will see the castle of Misaria. It is another Venetian monument of the island, built by the Knights of Saint John Tagma during the 14th century. In the castle are saved the remains of several structures and byzantine churches.
In Megalo Chorio you will see important religious monuments. Distinguishes the monastery of Saint Panteleimonas the protector of the island. It was built in 15th century in a beautiful location 6,5km northwest of Megalo Chorio.
2,5km west of the capital is the coastal settlement of Saint Antonios. There you can swim in its beach, one of the most famous in the island and visit the homonym monastery. The island’s most known beach is Eristos. It is very close to Megalo Chorio and has a wide endless shore. Natural continuance of it, is the beach of Plaka. You will enjoy your swim and water sports in crystal clear waters.
