Rome is the largest city in Italy and the capital of the modern italian state since 1870. It has a population of three million people and covers an overall area of 1.500 sq. km. Rome is the political, administrative, historic and cultural center of Italy, the seat of the State of the Vatican and the global center of Catholicism.

Rome was named differently through the route of history. It was named “capital of the world" (Caput Mundi), Eternal City, ancient, imposing, Rome of the Emperors and the Legions, Rome of the Pope and the Vatican, Rome of Pieta and Cappella Sixtina and the city of the seven hills (from the seven hills it has: Palatinos, Kapitolinos, Aventinos, Kailos, Eskilinos, Ouiminalios, Kyrinalios).
The Italian capital is a real site. It is worth taking a walk around it and admire the unique historic monuments.
Some of the registered trade-marks of Rome you ought visiting are: the Roman Market where ancient Rome is, Capitoline Hill, Piazza Navona, the historical center of Rome, Campo de’ Fiori with the Renaissance palaces, Piazza di Spagna with the boutique shops, Colosseum the largest extant roman construction in the world, Pantheon the quaintest cupola in Rome, and Fontana di Trevi the most famous fountain of the city, which has an impressive marble complex. According to a traditional legend if you throw a coin in the fountain, you will ensure your return to Rome!
The famous church of Trinita dei Monti is at the highest point of the city. In front of the church stands the Obelisco Sallustiano, one of the obelisks in Rome with the Christian Holy Cross.
If you want to make a complete tour around Rome, you have to visit the seat of the Roman Catholic church, the State of the Vatican City. The state came into existence by virtue of the Lateran Treaty, which was signed by Benito Moussolini and the pope Pius XI. You will also see the largest church of Christianity, the Basilica of St. Peter, which is also a unique museum.
The museums of the Vatican City have priceless exhibits and treasures from the Etruscan era to the modern art. You will be amazed by the Sistine Chapel of Michelangelo, by the murals of Raphael and the unique pieces of art you will see in Vatican City.
It is worth visiting the neighboring Pompeii city, which was ruined in 79 during the Mount Vesuvius eruption.
Rome has one of the most significant markets in the world. Piazza di Spagna has all the designer shops. In Via di Condotti you will find almost every famous designer you can think of, Italian and foreigner.Next to the expensive boutique shops you will find small shops with handmade items, fine leather clothes, antique shops and foodstuffs selling prosutto, gorgonzola and grappa ( a strong distillate like tsikoudia).
You will find malls all around the city and traditional bazaars, where you can buy nice things at reasonable prices.
