Folegandros is a small island but with long history. The first marks of inhabitation date back to prehistoric times. This is confirmed by the remains of a prehistoric settlement in the north part of the island. As first residents are considered Kares and later Finics. Krites settlers followed, who came to the island with their leader Minoa Folegandro. He gave his name to the island.
Later invaders- residents of the island were Dorians. During the 5th century BC Folegandros is dominated by Athenians.
In roman times it is used as a land of banishment.
During the venetian domination, Folegandros belongs to Doukato of Naxos and is managed by Markos Sanoudos. At that time it is built the castle of the island, which was the only settlement of it, protecting residents from pirates. In 1617, Folegandros is possessed by Turkish.
For a small period of time, from 1770 to 1774 it is domained by Russia. In1828 the island is confederated to the newly Greek Union.
In 19th century many immigrants from Konstantinople and Alexandria take refugee in the island and contribute to it’s development.
In the last couple of years the residents showing the natural beauties of Folegandros, have turned the island into a popular summer destination, ideal for those avoiding crowed places, seeking for the peace of an unexplored paradise…
