Yesterday meets with today in the historic rethymnian paths and along with Carnival King, they induce children and grown ups in a long party.
Rethymno has the best carnival celebrations in Crete. It has a long tradition, which is constantly enriched. The influences have not diluted its special cretan identity. This is why the city is flood with thousands of visitors who want to live this unique experience.
Rethymnian Carnival: let the dances begin!
From 1960 to our days the carnival of Rethymno reminds of the old days. The relive of old customs brings about memories of past times. Serenades take people back to the times of romance.
The hidden treasure game is the leader here too. The treasure is hidden somewhere in the town, waiting to be found.
Groups of disguised with impressive costumes pass by the Megali Porta and dance at the streets of the “Megali” and the "Mikri" agora (market).
The parade finishes at the Tessaron Martiron Square, where the feast continues with traditional songs and dancing.
The carnival ends with the grand parade right on the coastal road of S. Venizelos to the Agnostos Stratiotis Square.
The rethymnian carnival is the best in Crete. A venetian gondola attracts the locals to participate in this feast.
The First Monday of the Lent in the villages of Merona and Melidonia relive old customs such as the bride’s elopement, Kantis and mountzouroma, a unique experience you ought to live.
