ABOUT SKIATHOS

A beautiful and picturesque island with rich vegetation and amazing beaches that is crowded with tourists every summer. It is extended in an area of 48 sq.km. and is in a distance of 44 n.m. (3 hours) from Aghios Konstantinos and 41 n.m. (2 hours 45’) from Volos.
In the peninsula full of pines that divides the harbour in two parts they are saved ruins of the walls of the venetian castle (bourtzi). The lake, northeast of the harbour, is a significant acquatic bio-park for migratory birds.
Near the harbour it is the House-Museum where Alexandros Papadiamantis lived in and died.
The castle, in the north-western side of Skiathos, was the medieval capital of the island. Among the ruins they are saved the church of Christ, the cathedral of the medieval city as well as the churches of St. Marina and St. Nicholas.
You can visit the men’s monastery of Evangelistria established in 1797. In September of 1807 it was here that the oath of liberty was given by Nikotsaras, Papavlachavas, Yannis Stathas and Theodoros Kolokotronis. Here the first Greek flag has been made and blessed.
In the monastery of St. Charalambos the writer Alexandros Moraitides had retired a little before his death.

Another remarkable monastery in the island is Panaghia Kechria in the north-western part of the island.
The central autoroute reaches Koukounaries, 12 km. southwest of Skiathos with the famous beach where the pines reach the sea.
