About Elis

The Prefecture of Ilia (Elis) is located in the northwestern part of the Peloponnese and belongs to the Region of Western Greece. Its capital city is Pyrgos, while its western coastline borders the Ionian Sea. The area is known for its fertile plains, beautiful beaches, and mild Mediterranean climate.

Ilia has great historical and cultural importance because it is home to Ancient Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games. The region also features remarkable natural attractions, including the Foloi oak forest, the Kaiafas thermal springs, and several protected coastal ecosystems.

The local economy is largely based on agriculture, with significant production of potatoes, tomatoes, olive oil, and citrus fruits. Tourism is also a key sector, supported by the area's archaeological sites, long sandy beaches, and diverse opportunities for cultural and nature-based tourism.
