Agios Eystratios
About Agios Eystratios
The island of Agios Efstratios is a small island located between Lesbos and Lemnos, to which it administratively belongs.
It is one of the islands of the so-called "aggressive line". During the summer season, it has a regular ferry connection with the port of Piraeus and the islands of the North Aegean. However, the living conditions for the approximately 250 inhabitants are not the best during the winter.
It is a beautiful island, worth visiting to get to know its beauties, its history and its friendly inhabitants.
The island took its name from Saint Efstratios, who lived there in exile and died in the 9th century. The tomb of the Saint is located near the island's port.
Agios Efstratios or Ai Stratis, as the locals call their island, has an area of 45 sq. km. Its soil is volcanic with a little green but with a rich subsoil.
According to the findings, the island has been inhabited since the Mycenaean era. The excavations brought to light the ruins of the ancient city of Neai.
The island's only settlement extends to the northwestern coast, where the picturesque little harbor is also located. In 1968, a strong earthquake hit the island and almost destroyed the settlement. Most of the buildings that did not withstand the earthquake's blow dated back to the 17th century. Thus, the traditional settlement gave way to a new one built on the foundations of the previous village.
On the island, there are rented rooms where the summer visitors enjoy the hospitality of the inhabitants and the tranquility of the place.
You will swim at the beautiful beaches of the island, Agios Antonios, Agios Dimitrios, Ftiylo, Lidario, Panagia and Kalamia. While on a boat, you will tour the island and see the sea caves. In many of these, the Mediterranean monk seals find refuge.
