Symi Town

About Symi Town

Symi Town is the main port and capital of Symi island, located in a natural amphitheatrical bay on the northwestern coast. It is famous for its colorful neoclassical houses that rise steeply from the harbor, creating one of the most picturesque and iconic waterfronts in the Aegean. The town is divided into the bustling harbor area (Yialos) and the upper settlement (Chorio), connected by a long staircase known as Kali Strata.

Symi Town has a strong historical identity shaped by maritime trade, sponge diving, and shipbuilding, which once made the island prosperous. Many of the elegant mansions date back to the 19th century and reflect this period of wealth and cultural development. The harbor area is filled with cafés, restaurants, shops, and small hotels, while the upper town offers quieter streets and panoramic views.

Today, Symi Town is the main arrival point for visitors and the cultural heart of the island. It combines everyday island life with tourism, offering a unique mix of history, architecture, and vibrant harbor activity. Its colorful scenery and dramatic setting make it one of the most photographed towns in Greece.
