Agios nikolaos

Agios Nikolaos, the capital of the Lasithi prefecture, is a city that uniquely combines traditional charm with modern luxuries. For forty years, it has been an international tourist resort. This long-standing experience in tourism is reflected in the ultra-modern hotel facilities, the multitude of businesses (commercial, dining, entertainment) operating in the city, and the resort areas that offer all comforts and pleasures to visitors while significantly contributing to the local economy.
What makes Agios Nikolaos special is its picturesque character. The city is built at the eastern edge of Crete, on the northwestern side of the Mirabello Bay.
The jewel of the city is Lake Voulismeni. It is located in the city center and connects to the sea through a narrow canal. According to mythology, the goddesses Artemis and Athena used to bathe in this lake. The ancients believed that the lake had no bottom, while another local legend claims that it is connected underground to Santorini. Around the lake, massive red rocks create a stunning landscape, while the cafés and restaurants along the waterfront road offer hours of relaxation and enjoyment...
Starting a tour of the city, visitors are filled with unforgettable sights. The old neighborhoods, beautiful churches, and shops where you can find notable traditional works of art (handmade ceramics, knives, jewelry) and unique textiles will impress you. You will also discover luxurious restaurants, traditional tavernas serving exquisite dishes, and bars promising unforgettable nights.
A walk along the picturesque port of Agios Nikolaos is a must. The tile-roofed houses and moored caiques evoke times gone by. At the harbor entrance, two small islets—the Small and the Large Island, as locals call them—impress with their simple beauty. The city lighthouse is on the Small Island, while the Church of All Saints is on the Large Island.
The city¢s beaches stand out for their cleanliness and excellent organization. Specifically, the E.O.T. Beach offers all modern amenities for bathers. It is a fully organized beach, ideal for water sports enthusiasts. There, you can also find the area¢s only mini-golf, a bar, a taverna, and football and basketball courts.
Kitroplateia Beach, located in the city center, is particularly cosmopolitan and bustling. It is an organized beach surrounded by a paved promenade lined with hotels, restaurants, and cafés.
Ammoudi Beach is just a stone¢s throw from the city. It is relatively small but fully organized, where you can also practice water sports.
Almyros Beach is 2 km south of the city. The area is filled with tall eucalyptus trees and reeds growing in the spring waters. There, visitors can enjoy swimming and explore the rich flora and fauna of the region.
