Arta is the capital of the eponymous region and the second largest city in Epirus, after Ioannina.
The city¢s emblematic landmark is the famous Arta Bridge, which stands at the entrance of the city.
Today¢s city is built on the site of ancient Ambracia, founded in the 7th century by the Corinthians.
Arta also has a significant Byzantine heritage dating back to the Despotate of Epirus. Notable examples of architecture from this period still survive in various parts of the city. Among the most remarkable are the Byzantine churches of Agia Theodora, Blachernae, and Parigoritissa. The Parigoritissa Church, a cubic structure dating from the 13th century, is a unique architectural masterpiece featuring impressive mosaics. Inside, later frescoes can also be admired.
