ABOUT POROS
Since Antiquity Poros consisted of two ilands. The first and smaller one is a rock of volcano origin covered today from the magnificent city of Poros that was named formerly Sfairia. A small channel separates Sfairia from the other island. Bigger and full of trees named Kalavria-name that was after the cool pleasant breeze in summer. In the northern part of the island there are the ruins of the temple of Possidon, protector god of the island. The temple was built in 520 a.C. approximately and it was the main place of the allies of Kalavria, that is a relegious relationship among Greek cities. In the temple of Possidon had found shelter, chased by Phillip of Macedonia, the ancient Athenian orator Dimosthenis, in the orchard of the said temple he terminated his life drinking the hemlock. Poros took part in the revolution of 1821. In the harbour of Poros in the year 1830 it was installed the first war naval dockyard of Greece. In August 1831 it took place the seabattle of Poros. Poros means passage. In the edge of this passage it is built up in a hill amphitheatrically the traditional city of Poros. Poros is full of trees, it has picturesque gulfs and in a distance of 32 n.m. from Piraeus with a surface of 31 sq.km. Reaching Poros by ship you can see at the highest place of the island at the top of the hill the histirical clock built in 1927. It is worthwhile to admire the view from there during sunset. The place has a magnificent view to the green sides of Adera, the famous Lemontrees-forest that has been declared as a protected area by the European Community, Troizina, the small ships passing by through the channel and to the entire natural bay of Poros. Eastwards of the harbour there is situated the islet Bourtzi with the small but well preserved castle of Eidek, a building of 1827. Many of the houses of Poros are built in neo-classical architectural style. Of particular beauty is the house of Deimezis, built of grey and red stone as well as the Grivas' shop with the big doors and the fantastic internal decoration. Also to be mentioned the Villa Galini that has accommodated emminent persons of the art and science. In the centre of the city it is located the Archaeological Museum with interesting exhibits from the local excavations, Hatzopoulios Municipal Library, the Cathedral of St.George with the wall-paintings of Parthenis as well as the cultural centre. Leaving the town toward northwest there are the installations of the War Navy Force, The Gym Centre and the first house of Othonas. Left towards the western side there are the regions Perlia, Neorio, Limanaki Agapis (small Port of Love) and the ruins of the Russian naval dockyard. To the right side of the channel, towards east, the road leads to Askeli separated to the Monastery of Zoodohos Pighi (of the 18th century), built in a hillside full of trees with view to the sea. In the centre of the island there are the ruins of the Temple of Possidon in doric rythm (520 a.C.). The temple is situated in the hill Palatia, between two mountains Prophet Elias (314m.) and Vigla (378m.) with panoramic view to the channel of Poros and the facing it green seaside of Peloponnese. Poros is the island of calmness and relaxation. Full of pines that reach the steep seasides or the sandy beaches where you can go by bus or by boat setting off from the harbour of Poros every 10 minutes. Also, small ships make daily small cruises touring the island.
