THE BEACH OF KARPATHOS
In Karpathos you will meet many beautiful beaches that distinguish for their natural beauties, clarity of waters and good organization.
At first you will see the three consecutive beaches of cove of Pigadia, close to the center of the capital. First in row is Ammos – Xenina, a relatively small shore with shallow waters. It is fully organized with umbrellas, sun beds, while near the beach are taverns and coffeehouses. Next we meet Afoti beach with a beautiful shore. Characteristics are the pillars of paleochristianic basilica style of Saint Fotini church, close to the shore. Third in row is the beach of Vronti, with crystal clear waters and extended shore.
10km from Pigadia you will meet the beach Pouliou Potami. A wide dirt road just before Ammoopi will lead you there. It is a relatively isolated beach with clear waters and thick pebbles, ideal for those avoiding crowds.
Next is Votsalakia beach in location Ammoopi. One of the most beautiful and cosmopolitan in the island. It is characterized by small pebbles, from which was named. It is fully organized, while around it there are hotels, taverns and many shops.
A peninsula with a small church in its highest point separates Votsalakia of the beach Pera Ammos. The extended shore and blue waters are a pole of attraction for the lovers of swimming.
Next station is the beach of Ammoopi, also known as Small Ammoopi. It is a relatively small beach with golden shore and clear waters. Highly impressive is the white rock at the end of it.
One of the most beautiful hidden beaches in the region is Kastelia. There are two ways to reach it. One of them is to follow the short cut of Ammoopi road after Agios Georgios to the left.
A downhill, dirtroad will lead you there. The second way to reach it is by car, following the path between Pera Ammos and Votsalakia. When you meet “laps” of rocks and umbrellas between them be sure it’s there.
The beach of Damatrias with crystal clear waters and blond shore is ideal for families and for those seeking for some privacy. Right across the beach is the small island of Mira.
The best beach for windsurfing is Vata. It is 13,5km from Pigadia and you can reach it by following the dirtroad of 300m beginning from the central road just before the airport (there is a sign). It is a beautiful beach with thick sand and clear waters. Its length is more than one km. Due to marine flows Vata is the ideal place for windsurfing. Organization and infrastructures are impressive. If you are a fan of this sport, you will enjoy it in a friendly and completely safe environment.
Appropriate for windsurfing are the two consecutive beaches of Valia and Nikolaki Pounda 15km from Pigadia. You can reach them by following the left short cut of the road, just before the airport. Very close is the beach of Makris Gialos, the best spot for surfers. Sandy with shallow waters, extended, if you are a lover of water sports or swimming, you will love it.
One of the beaches you have to visit is that of Diakofti. The beautiful scenery will enchant you. The white sand and blue waters create a dreamy natural scenery. To reach it you have to cross a shallow dirtroad of 6km, which is crossed by the central road to Arkasa and follows the west wire fencing of the airport. The route might be a little tiring, but the beauty you’ll see, will make up for it. A white strip of land divides sea into two pieces and creates a small peninsula.
On the road to Arkasa, a short cut – just before the airport – leads to another beach of unique natural beauty. The beach with the peculiar name Mihaliou Kipos impresses with the gigantic rocks that look like natural sculptures. Characteristic is the big shore with shallow waters.
If you prefer more isolated beaches, in the region of Arkasa you will meet two hidden beaches, of Psoraris and Pounda, surrounded by white rocks. In its crystal waters you will enjoy your swim. Close to it the beach of Agriallaopotamos preferred by the lovers of windsurfing. With its white sand and blue waters seems rather exotic.
Agios Nikolaos is the organized beach of Arkasa. It is 15,5km from Pigadia and provides bathers all comforts. Here you will find umbrellas, sun beds, play beach volley and eat in the coastal taverns. Characteristics are the white sand and shallow waters that make it ideal for small children. Best spot is the fish village Psarochori with a beautiful small sandy beach. It is worth dining in the settlement’s taverns. Try fresh fish and delicious appetizers of the Dodecanese cuisine.
The consecutive beaches of Lefkos are a pole of attraction for Karpathos visitors. First and most cosmopolitan is that of Gialos Chorafi. Here you will find umbrellas and sun beds, while in the settlement are hotels, rooms to let and taverns. Natural continuance is the beach Panagias Limani. A small shore relatively isolated. Next is the beach of Fragomanola, the biggest in Lefkos. It is a very impressive beach with good organization. Right across it is the small island of Sokastro.
The most famous beach in Karpathos is Apella. You can approach it by car by following the road to Spoa after the crossroad to Kira Panagia or by boat from Pigadia. Its waters deepen sharply, while sand and pebbles cover the shore. Behind the beach the piny slope will impress you as it looks like embracing the sea.
Same impressing is the beach of Kira Panagia. Its photo is found in many tourist catalogues. Thick sand, blue waters and abrupt rocks around it protect it from waves. A magnificent scenery you won’t see anywhere else. The beach is organized and very close to it is the homonym settlement.
