PROPHET ELIAS
 |
Prophet Elias (Profitis Ilias) is the highest point in Santorini, rising to an elevation of 567 meters above sea level between the villages of Pyrgos and Kamari. This vantage point offers a breathtaking, panoramic view that encompasses the entire crescent-shaped island, the dramatic Caldera, and the surrounding Cycladic islands, making it an essential stop for travelers. The rugged, rocky landscape of the summit harmonizes perfectly with the endless blue of the Aegean Sea stretching out below. At the very peak of the mountain sits the historic Monastery of Prophet Elias, founded in the early 18th century (around 1711) by two local monks. The monastery historically served as an important religious and cultural center for the island, and during the Ottoman era, it housed a secret school that helped preserve the Greek language and heritage. Its architecture resembles a fortress, built to protect its spiritual treasures, which include rare manuscripts, Byzantine icons, and ecclesiastical artifacts of immense historical value.
The journey to Prophet Elias, whether by road or via the scenic hiking trails starting from Pyrgos, reveals the rich natural landscape and the traditional vineyards of the island's interior. Although access to the interior of the monastery is limited and follows specific visiting hours, the surrounding grounds are always accessible for those wishing to experience the profound tranquility and a unique sunset. It stands as a remarkable destination where religious devotion, history, and natural grandeur meet at the highest peak of Santorini.
