Till 1913 Syvota were under the domination of Turks who called it Mourto. In 1959 it was named Syvota after the homonym sea-battle taken place in the nearby islands during the Peloponnesian war (433 B.C.). It was a sea-battle of the Corinthian and Thesprotian navy against the Corfu naval forces ally of the Athenians.
In the prefecture of Thesprotia and in a distance of 25 km. from the harbour of Igoumenitsa it is situated the touristical by the sea resort Syvota with marvellous beaches in a region full of olive trees. In the small, picturesque port of Syvota several ships are moored.
In a distance of 8 km. south of Syvota there is the village Perdika known for its fish and the beaches Arillas and Karavostassi.
Going for an excursion by ship from Syvota to Parga it is the best way to get to know enchanting beaches and small bays, places inaccessible by land. Near Syvota it is located Bella Vraka, a beach of unique beauty a peninsula-island.
Other fascinating beaches for swimming is Zavia, Pissina, Zeri, Gallikos Molos, Mikros Paradissos, Megali Ammos.
Syvota are surrounded by the islets Mavro Oros, St. Nicholas and Bella Vraka that you can visit by boat.
