ABOUT SAMOS

Samos is a fruiful place, full of green landscapes, golden beaches and the birthplace of many philosophers and mathematicians of Antiquity as Epicouros, Aristarchos and Pythagoras. It is extended in 476 sq.km. and it is in a distance of 174 n.m. (approx.9 hours) from Piraeus.
Capital and harbour of the island is Samos or Vathy with the mansions and the buildings in new-classical style, amphitheatrically built in the embrace of the homonym harbour, opposite the old city with the uphill narrow streets. In the Archeological Museum of the city you will visit findings from the Iraio, Lefkias statue of young man "kouros", works of sculpture of Hellenistic period, statues of women, collection of bronze objects, pre-historic vessels, pottery of the Geometrical and Archaic Age.
In the Art Gallery that is housed in the Town Hall of the city, there are relics in memory of the history of the island since 1821 up to Modern Times, "Samos Constitution", portraits of leaders and national fighters.
The Ecclissiastical and Byzantine Museum that is housed in the Cathedral Building, includes a collection of works in silver and gold as well as golden embroidered art-works,icons, manuscripts in membranes. In the Monastery Aghia Zoni (Holy Ceinture) that was built in 1695 frescos have been saved. You can visit the Monastery of Zoodohos Pighi with the temple in byzantine cross style.Of extraordinary post-byzantine architecture is the small church of Ay-Yannis in Ano Vathy.
Of enchanting beauty is the gulf Possidonio in a distance of 2000 metres from the Small Asian shores. 10 km. west of Vathy is the picturesque by the sea Kokkari, in a green landscape, with olive-trees, vineyards and pine-trees. Named after "kokkari" (onion bulb for planting)that was growing formerly in the country. The fantastic beaches, the picturesque landscape, the amazing shops and amusement centres, all contribute to the aspect that it is the most favourite destination of tourists. Do visit the church of Panaghia (Virgin Mary) as well as St.Nicolas with remarkable marble sculptured temple.
Pythagorio, the most touristic place of the island, built almost on the ruins of an ancient Village of Samos, has a big harbour on the one side of which the statue of Pythagoras is viewing the sea. In a small hill near the castle of Logothetis are found the ruins of ancient Astypalea. To the north it is the ancient theatre of marble of the 6th century a.C. as well as the church of Panaghia Spiliani.
The Efpalinian Trench, a work of the mechanic Efpalinos who had occupied with the water-supply of the ancient city, had lasted 50 years. In the archeological site of Ireo, where according to the tradition the godess Hera was born and grew up, one of the most important monuments is the temple of Hera, the big altar and the holy street-namely the road leading from the city to the temple.
