METHANA
|
Although it is known to most only for its baths, Methana offer many opportunities for hiking and an extensive network of well-marked trails and dirt roads. Methana also offers beautiful beaches and is very close to Athens (about 2 hours by boat and 2.5 drive from the new road Epidaurus - Kalloni) while not overcrowded during the summer like the neighboring islands of the Saronic Gulf.
In Methana one can also find a large number of interesting antiquities and signs of volcanic activity throughout the peninsula: there are 32 craters scattered throughout her! The peninsula of Methana, although the area is small, it is a place worth much more than a cursory visit!
The route described here is approximately 23 km and a height difference of 600 meters ascent. It starts from the port of Methana peninsula and crosses the direction almost north. Passes the Stafrolongo, the steep slopes above the deep, from where the view is amazing, and continues to Kameni Volcano Country. The route in its entirety may be carried out in 6-7 hours. Of the 23 km of the route, the last 13 km of the route (where essentially Blown back by Country in Deep and Methana) is asphalted and you can avoid them if better organized and use a taxi or one of the few buses.
