The beautiful village of Myrtos lies around a small bay of south Crete, in front of the Mediterranean Sea.
big BLUE stands in the west end of the village, towards a long sandy beach which spreads until the end of the local road and splits into isolated little bays.
A green valley covered with orange, lemon, olive and banana trees spreads to the east and, together with the location of the village up to the 35th parallel of latitude, contributed to the temperate climate of Myrtos, bearing a very mild winter of average temperature 12o C and the cool summer 30o C.
This might be the reason that Myrtos is the only one place of the Mediterranean where swallows remain and settle during winter.
Extended archaeological excavations uncovered two archaic settlements near Myrtos.
One just beyond the village, in the site of Phournos, dated in the Early Minoan period (2600-2200 B.C.).
The other, in the site of Pyrgos, dated in the Late Minoan period (2200-1600 B.C.).
In the west of the village is also situated a Roman bath, of which one may recognize remains of walls and colonnades spread around the big BLUE and the nearby beach.
In the exceptional village of south Crete, which preserves and keeps alive the features and traditions of the Cretan folklore life, we created a very special touristic unit. In our unit each studio has its own uniqueness.
Blue and white are the main colours. "Ocean", "Naytilous", "Breeze" are some of the name of our studios.
However, if one stands to one of the wide verandas and looks in front, he realizes that the name big BLUE means the big blue of the sea in the extend of the horizon.
The big BLUE consists of six studios, 2 apartments and 4 rooms with total capacity of 40 beds, all with air-conditions, sea view verandas and privet WC.
Each studio is 30 m2 equipped with cooking facilities. It may be used by two or three guests.
Each apartment is 45 m2 equipped with 2 bedrooms and 2 WC and cooking facilities. It may be used by four or five guests. All have a wide veranda with a magnificent view to the sea.
The seashore is just in front of your feet, 30m from your room.
In our quite green garden breakfast is served and you may also have some of our own produced red home wine or real 55% alcohol "raki".
You will find almost everything you wish in the village: cafe's, bars, restaurants, as well as bakery, butchery and supermarket, which make residence comfortable and pleasant.
Myrtos is connected by bus to Heraklion, Agios Nikolaos, Sitia and Ierapetra, which is the major town of the area, 14 Km away and the 4th bigger town of Crete. You may also rent a car or motorcycle and visit Knossos, Festos, Matalla, Vai etc.
However you never feel bored if you choose to stay around Myrtos. You may visit the ancient sites around the village and along the small hills of the area, the protected by E.U Chrissi Island (7miles from Ierapetra with daily trip), the biggest pin forest of Crete "Selakano" or one of the famous gorge "Sarakina" or "Cha".
You may rent a bike or take an afternoon walk to the valley and enjoy the smell of oranges and lemons. You may fish, go jogging along the beach or finally.... enjoy the breeze in your veranda.
