The Proastiakos Suburban Railway extended to Piraeus on June 4th 2007. The new line has a length of 7,5 km with intermediate – new – stations to Lefka, Rentis and Rouf. These new stations are accessible. The gentrification of the Railway Station of Piraeus will be completed at the end of autumn.
Mr. Mihalis Liapis, Minister of Transportation and Communication said: “The Proastiakos Suburban Railway came to the harbor. With the beginning of the tourist period, the harbor is connected to the biggest airport of our country. The Proastiakos connects Piraeus to the Airport in less than an hour, with the possibility in making it shorter. There will be two services per hour to the Airport and to Corinth.
The Greek and foreign tourists have now the chance to travel to our islands with comfort and luxury.
Piraeus has a new massive mean of transport, which changes the junction map of the city.
The harbor then will have all the Massive Means of Transport offering travelers a complete transport service.
The Proastiakos Suburban Railway is about to connect the station of Agios Dionysios to the station of Agios Ioannis Rentis in order to service passengers travelling to Crete”.
Mr. Liapis noted that “ the central railway system connects more and more areas in Athens. Citizens now have more options in their urban and interurban transportation. The expansions of Proastiakos improve everyday life of every citizen”.
The Minister of Transportation and Communication noted that “ there are deliberations with the mayors, in order to expand the Proastiakos Suburban Railway to Lavrio. It is estimated that within the next month, it will be blazed a new railway connection to the second biggest harbor of Attica. At that time, the Proastiakos will reach Kiato and later Xylokastro”.
