Athens - land of champions
|
Its not too late to jet off to Athens and support your team in this year's Champions League Final. Why not combine a trip to the football with a chance to sample all this fantastic historical city has to offer?
For a city so steeped in myth and history, Athens is a surprisingly modern metropolis. Contemporary Athens is more about the here and now - after-hours bars and bouzouki stars, designer studs and beach parties - than the ancient classics. But turn almost any corner and the Parthenon and Acropolis still loom large.
The Acropolis and the Parthenon dominate Athens and are must-sees on any trip to Greece - even if it has to be squeezed in around a football game. Despite time taking its toll the Parthenon still inspires awe and the Acropolis is worth the visit just for the magnificent view of Athens and the surrounding temples below.
Olympic regeneration has also revived the capital's coastline, now dubbed the Athenian Riviera so if the sun comes out then the beaches of Athens are not to be missed. If you are travelling to the football with a wife or partner in tow then make sure you take them to the Plaka, the area of winding streets around the Acropolis. It's renowned for its small shops, restaurants, and some good examples of local domestic architecture.
A haunt for the WAGS will be Kolonaki where designer boutiques, coffee shops and chic restaurants line the streets. From Versace to specialist Greek designers the WAGS are certain to come back laden with bags.
