Vatheia is a village and a true landmark. Located in the heart of Mani, 105 km south of Sparta, it is a delightful surprise for travelers encountering it for the first time. This traditional settlement is famous for its tower houses. It has been declared a protected village, and since 1980, the Greek National Tourism Organization (EOT) has restored most of the towers, transforming them into traditional guesthouses.
The stunning landscape of this old Maniot fortress-village captivates every visitor with its wild and imposing beauty. Perched strategically atop a hill, it is surrounded by the ruins of older settlements.
Vatheia has been dubbed the “Parthenon” of Maniot architectural tradition. Built on a hilltop close to the sea, the impressive village complex consists of around 70 houses and tower houses. The settlement developed after the 18th century and thrived until the 19th century. During the early decades of the 20th century, residents began moving to larger cities, and by 1980 only a few inhabitants remained. The sight of the abandoned village was truly desolate. The decision by EOT to restore these unique architectural treasures of Laconia was a lifeline for the area, reviving it from its ruins.
